FURTHER ASPECTS OF THE IMCO STANDARDS FOR PROCEDURES AND ARRANGEMENTS FOR THE DISCHARGE OF NOXIOUS LIQUID SUBSTANCES FROM SHIPS

This report describes further work carried out by Warren Spring Laboratory to aid the development of the IMCO Standards for Procedures and Arrangements for the Discharge of Noxious Liquid Substances. Three aspects of the Standards are considered: 1. A residue assessment method is described and instructions on its use are given. 2. Experiments involving the discharge of insoluble and partially soluble substances into a ship's wake are described. It is shown that the Standards should not require that products be emulsified in water prior to their discharge to the sea. 3. The application of the Standards to the operation of a chemical tanker is considered. It is shown that compliance with the standards need not unduly affect the operation of such vessels.
