GUIDE TO SELECTING SHIPBOARD CONTAINER AND TRAILER RESTRAINT SYSTEMS

This report is in microfiche form. After a discussion of the types of failure to which containers and trailers are subject during ocean passages there is an illustrated description of systems used to secure loads both above and below deck; the relative merits and costs of the systems are discussed. The effects of ship motions on lashing and restraining systems are considered, existing methods of determining forces being reviewed and compared with the output of a computer program. Formulae are derived for the design of restraint systems, and this subject is pursued in greater detail, including safety factors, etc. Sample design calculations are given.
