SCALE FACTORS FOR DISTORTED ICE MODEL TESTS

Distortion caused by the use of different scale factors within an ice model is discussed. Specific properties of the ice, i.e. strength and modulus, are important but are difficult to scale equally. Equations are presented for scaling the characteristic lengths and forces in the ice and for relating these to the strength and modulus. The distortion in the model is then described in terms of the characteristic length scales. Examples are given to illustrate the distortion that can occur when using a specific scale factor.
