CORRELATION TESTS BY THE NATIONAL MARITIME INSTITUTE, UNITED KINGDOM

The National Maritime Institute, U.K., is collaborating, together with two American research establishments <Hydronautics Inc., and Stevens Institute of Technology> in a series of model tests whose aim is to study the correlation between model and full-scale results from ship manoeuvring trials. The basis for the study is the comprehensive body of information already available from full-scale manoeuvring trials, in deep and in shallow water, carried out in 1977 on the VLCC Esso Osaka. The longer-term objective of this work is the verification of simulation predictions based on model experiments. In this paper the Author, of NMI, describes the programme of work set in motion at the Institute under this collaborative arrangement between the participating research establishments.
