Banda, the first vessel of an order for four trailing-suction hopper dredgers for the Indonesian Government, was delivered by IHC Holland in April 1983. Three of the four vessels, including Banda, are of the IHC Splittrail split-hopper type; the other two of this type are being built in Indonesia. The fourth vessel, built by IHC Holland and delivered in late 1983, is the Halmahera; she is much larger than the other three, is of conventional design, and is similar to three others supplied to Indonesia some time ago. Brief information is given on the design of the three split-hopper <divided-hull> dredgers. They are suitable for operation in small shallow harbours, and have a single suction-pipe; the main engines drive twin c.p. propellers and the generators for the dredge-pump and bow-thruster motors. Principal particulars of Banda and Halmahera are:- Banda/ Halmahera: Length 66/85.5m; Beam 14/16m; Depth 4.9/8m; Hopper capacity 1000/2900m; Load capacity 1590/3500 tons; Maximum dredging depth 14/20m; Power, dredge-pump<s> 322 kW/2 x 602 kW; Propulsion 2 x 622 kW/2 x 1400 kW; Bow thruster 200/295 kW; Total machinery output 1720/5200 kW; Speed, laden 10.7/12.4 knots; Accommodation 25/60 persons; Classification: Banda is classed to BV I 3/3 E + Hopper Dredger <Coastal Service>, and Halmahera to the Indonesian class BKI + A 100 1 <Kapal Keruk> and to BV I 3/3 E + Hopper Dredger <Deep Sea>.
