BUILDING A NEW CABLE SHIP (USNS ZEUS),

This paper was presented in Mar. 1982 at a Soc. N.A.M.E. <San Diego Section> meeting. The 14,225-ton <displacement> cable-ship Zeus, due to enter service in early 1984, is the first U.S. Navy cable-ship designed as such from the keel up. She is designated as a cable repair ship, and has complete handling facilities for repair and trunk laying operations over the bow and stern. The article describes the ship and the design and construction work involved in this project.
