The Ludwig Prandtl, built by the Heinrich Grube yard, Hamburg, for the GKSS Research Centre, Geesthacht <W. Germany>, entered service in Sept. 1983. She is intended to assist in GKSS investigations by monitoring the chemical suspensions, sediments, and harmful substances in general in the tidal areas of the large rivers of northern Germany. These investigations are of economic and ecological importance, and after discussing them together with the role of the Ludwig Prandtl, the article describes the vessel and her operational equipment. A crew of two will normally be carried. The wheelhouse is arranged for one-man control of helm and machinery and also has a chart-table for the scientist in charge; there are work places for six scientists in the laboratories in the flexibly- mounted deckhouse. Accommodation for a total of eight persons is provided. The vessel's main particulars include:- Length, o.a. 23m; Moulded breadth 6.1m; Draught 0.9m design, 1.0m max., with corresp- onding dwts 10 t and 20 t; Depth to main deck 2.3 m; Air draught <mast lowered> 5.1m; Two Deutz SF 12 L 413 air-cooled unsupercharged main engines, 184kW each at 1800rpm, with 2:1 gearing for twin f.p. propellers arranged in tunnels; speed 12 knots; bunkers for 5 days' operations; two high-performance rudders; 360deg, rotatable thruster at bow and at stern <available for propulsion at 4 knots as well as manoeuvring> classification GL + 100 A4 W, Hull Strengthened for K Notation, + MC <the hull bottom is strengthened to allow grounding>.
