PIPELINE PROTECTION WITH HOT-APPLIED COATINGS

After more than six years of operation carrying the hottest crude oil in the North Sea, the anti-corrosion system of the Phillips Ekofisk pipeline is still functioning successfully. The 212-mile line which stretches from Norway to Teesside is protected with a glass-reinforced coal-tar enamel hot-applied coating. This article briefly describes the production of coal tar and bitumen protective coatings and their applications in pipeline protection by means of the so-called "coat and wrap" technique.
