LCAC: AMPHIBIOUS ASSAULT AT 50 KNOTS

The LCAC <Landing Craft Air Cushion> is a new amphibious assault hovercraft for the U.S. Marine Corps, currently under construction at the Bell Halter shipyard at New Orleans. The vessel will have a length of 26.5 m, a breadth of 14.3 m and a height of 7.12 m. The cargo deck size is to be 20.117 x 8.32 m, and the normal payload 54,432 kg. Max. speed fully loaded in sea state 2 is expected to be 50 knots. The air cushion will have a height of 1.52 m. Descriptions are given of the lift and propulsion system, the skirt, the control station module, the hull structure, and the auxiliary power supply and communications systems. Finally there is a brief discussion of possible derivatives for such tasks as minelaying, minesweeping, troop transport, arctic transport, fuel transport and other roles. The programme is expected to involve a total of between 110 and 130 craft, with deliveries commencing in 1985.
