A detailed description is given of the new fishery protection and patrol vessel Vigilant which entered service with the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries for Scotland. The Vigilant, designed for 2-3 week patrols in the rough seas of the North Atlantic, west of Rockall, joins an earlier ship, the Sulisker, in patrol duties. Both ships have been built by Ferguson-Ailsa Ltd. of Port Glasgow. A feature of the ship is its large unobstructed weather deck aft of the superstructure, which is suitable for receiving items of equipment, stores, etc., lowered from a helicopter. Bulbplate bilge keels, and fin stabilisers, are fitted. The ship is equipped with the most modern navigational instruments including a Racal-Decca anti-collision radar with automatic alarms to indicate any unauthorised vessels within restricted waters, and an Omega satellite navigation receiver to establish the ship's precise position and course. Propulsion is by two Ruston 12-cylinder vee-type RKCM four-stroke uni-directional Diesels, each capable of developing 2820 bhp at 750 rpm. They are coupled through reduction gearing to two c.p. propellers. A hydraulically operated multi-plate clutch ensures that each gearbox can, in emergency, be engaged at maximum revolutions with full ahead pitch on the c.p. propeller. There are two spade rudders and, for added manoeuvrability, a bow thruster unit. Main particulars of Vigilant:-- length 71.4 m o.a., 64 m b.p.; moulded breadth 11.6 m; moulded depth 7.4 m; summer load draught 4.76 m; deadweight 388 tonnes; speed 18 knots.
