After a general survey of shaft generator arrangements, the author <of ASEA> discusses the technical and economic aspects of the various arrangements under the headings:- Shaft Generator with Constant Speed; Shaft Generators with Variable Speed; Systems with Full Static Frequency Conversion; Systems with Partial Static Frequency Conversion; Cost Comparisons <Investment Cost - Total Cost and Price of Energy>. A more general application of shaft generators is recommended, both for new ships and for retrofitting, in order to reduce the cost of electricity generation. An investigation is needed in each specific case to provide a basis for an optimum solution; for this, it is necessary to have an overall view of the installation and the operational pattern of the ship.
