The Mitsubishi company recently announced the introduction of a "superlongstroke" version, the "L" series, of its UEC low-speed engine. The new series will embrace cylinder bores of 370, 450, 520 and 600 mm, b.m.e.p. will be from 15.54 to 15.68 bars, rpm will range from 210 to 110, and the stroke/bore ratio will be 3.13:1. Specific fuel consumption will be 124 g/bhp-hr in the UEC 60L engine. Modifications embodied in the L series, summarised and shown diagrammatically in this short article, include: adding a pneumatic cylinder to the fuel injector valves to increase injection pressure during low-load operation and so give better injection of poor-quality fuels; new type of hard material for injector valve seats, and independent nozzle-cooling system; new pattern of bore-cooling drillings for cylinder head and top of liner; reduced cooling of exhaust valve so as to make more waste heat available for recovery; oil-cooled pistons; and rearranged scavenge ports. A de-rating <output/rpm and s.f.c.> chart for the L series, and a diagram showing the progress in cylinder output, m.e.p., and s.f.c. from the A type through to the L series, are also included.
