FATIGUE AND FRACTURE OF STRUCTURAL ELEMENTS UNDER RANDOM LOADS

The basic principles of fracture mechanics are used to examine the fatigue life of structural elements. Three approaches are taken, which are explained and illustrated with reference to the fatigue life of a steel plate in the bow of an ice-breaking ship. In anticipation of a general numerical approach, the third method has been extended to include random loads described by any probability density function.
