CALCULATION OF STRESSES, DUE TO TRANSVERSE LOADS, IN THE HULL-GIRDER UPPER CHORD OF SHIPS WITH LARGE HATCHES

Germanischer Lloyd recently completed, for the FDS <the W. German shipbuilding research centre>, a research project in which the influence of various parameters on the transverse strength of ships with long hatch-openings was investigated. The Report on the project <FDS Report No. 135/1982> included information on the relevant strength calculations and advice on the design of the structural details concerned. Formulae for the approximate dimensioning of main structural members were developed, and should be of assistance in the structural design of modern multi-purpose cargoships. The article, based on the Report, discusses those parts of the project that deal with structural design, under the headings: 1: General. 2: The Calculation Model (a three-dimensional FE model embracing the entire hull was used for the transverse strength calculations). 3: Loading-Cases. 4: Calculations Results. 5: Proposed Solutions for Structural Design. 6: Parametric Studies.
