938-TEU SPECIAL CONTAINER SHIP TYPE MERCUR II -- A NEW DEVELOPMENT OF THE VEB WAMOWWERFT, WARNEMUNDE

The first vessel of a new series of special containerships, the MS Kapitan Gavrilov was built by Warnowwerft, Warnemunde for the Soviet owner, A/V "Sudoimport", Moscow, to whom she was delivered in June 1982. The ships, which are a further development of the series type Mercur I, provide stacking areas for 938 containers, 536 in the four holds, and 402 on deck. With an operating range of 21,000 n.m. and strengthened to USSR classification LI for navigation in ice, the ships will go into service on the Balt-Orient Line between Western Europe and the Far East. Principal particulars are:- Length 173.9m o.a., 163.57m b.p.; moulded breadth 25.4m; depth to main deck 15.9m; depth to 2nd deck 11.9m; design draught 9.02m; freeboard draught 9.82m; deadweight 13,330 tonnes at 9.02m, 16,030 tonnes at 9.82m. The ship is powered by a two-stroke, crosshead diesel engine type 9 DKRN 80/160-4 <m.c.r. 15,882 kW at 122 rpm> driving a single propeller.
