The article, which includes information on the activities, relating to the transport of spent <i.e., irradiated> nuclear fuel, of British Nuclear Fuels Ltd and Pacific Nuclear Transport Ltd <PNTL>, in which BNFL has a majority shareholding, describes Pacific Teal, recently delivered to PNTL by Swan Hunter's Hebburn yard. She is the third 3000-dwt purpose-built spent nuclear-fuel carrier from this yard, and is intended for the voyage pattern: UK and/or northern France to Japan via Panama to deliver empty flasks, and a return leg to Europe with loaded flasks. See also Abs. No. 51143 <Aug. 1979>. Pacific Teal's five cargo holds are separated from one another by watertight bulkheads and from the side shell by wing tanks; the article includes general-arrangement drawings which show these arrangements and the method of stowing the 24 flasks, the maximum number carried, in two tiers. The hatch covers and the flask support beams are handled by the ship's 27 t <swl> gantry crane; the flasks <which weigh between 78 and 109 t> are handled by shore cranes. The hold ventilation and cargo cooling arrangements <essential for safety with these cargoes> are described. The several alternator sets are housed in two generator rooms <shaft alternators have been avoided>. Principal particulars include:- Length o.a. 103.9m, b.p. 99m; breadth mld. 16 m; draught 5.51 m full load, 5.7m extreme; depth 10m to upper deck, 7.2 m to main deck; two Allen 8S37-G main engines, running on gas oil, derated to 2 x 1364 kW mcr at 600 rpm and driving twin f.p. screws at 200 rpm through reverse/reduction gearboxes; speed 13.5 kn; 7-t bow-thruster; complement 24; classification LR + 100 A1, + LMC, + RMC. Machinery spaces are constantly manned, and Japanese safety requirements are met. It is mentioned that PNTL has invited tenders for a larger ship of this type, to be called Pacific Sandpiper.
