OUTLINE OF A NEW ICE TANK FOR ICE-GOING VESSELS AND POLAR ONSHORE STRUCTURES

A new ice model basin has been built at Tsu Research Laboratories of Nippon Kokan K.K.<NKK>. The tank has a length of 20m, breadth 6m and depth 2m and is designed to conduct experiments for polar offshore structures as well as icegoing ships. The paper describes the general layout and special features of the new basin, e.g. refrigerating system, techniques for nucleating, growing and melting of ice, etc.
