COMPRESSIVE FAILURE OF CHALK

Using a closed-loop programmable testing machine, complete stress-strain curves were obtained for specimens of grey chalk, chalk marl and glauconitic marl taken from site investigation boreholes for the channel tunnel. The results are presented as an average stress-strain curve for each stratum with upper and lower envelopes. Correlation coefficients are given for modulus, strength and brittleness plotted against calcium carbonate and moisture content for each stratum. (A) /TRRL/
