A NOTE ON MANOEUVRING IN RESTRICTED WATER: DISCUSSION PAPER FOR THE R.I.N.A. SHIP CONTROL GROUP OPEN MEETING, NOV, 1982

This note deals with some of the special problems associated with manoeuvring in restricted water. The general heading "restricted water" covers 5 different situations which can all be superimposed. They are: <1> shallow water, <2> channels and canals, <3> berthing and slow speed manoeuvres, <4> interaction with other ships, and <5> collisions. Before examining each of these situations in detail, the note briefiy discusses how the equations of motion developed for open water can be adapted to the restricted water case. The problems of doing so are studied and further research work is recommended where no satisfactory solution exists.
