The main types of ship vibration measurement are briefiy reviewed and the "shaker test" for identifying the dynamic properties of a ship prior to sea trials is discussed in some detail. The vibration excitation and measuring systems used in the shaker test are described and examples of their application are presented. A trouble-shooting vibration measurement procedure suitable for both single- and twin-screw vessels is outlined.
