The purpose of this paper is to introduce the logic and principles of hull production planning as practised in the Japanese shipbuilding industry. The function of hull production in a shipyard is to construct a hull structure consisting of numerous steel pieces to achieve the following objectives: i> to maintain the ship's expected performance; ii> to maintain high accuracy; iii> to maintain the planned schedule; and iv> to maintain expected productivity. The concept of the whole hull production planning process is introduced by using examples of the planning system developed by IHI.
