The lashing of containers <where necessary> in Container ships and, to a limited extent, the lashing of trailers and other vehicles in ro/ro ships are subject to regulations laid down by the Classfication Societies. After briefly discussing these requirements, the Author discusses in more detail the securing of cargoes in dry-cargo ships <which, he considers, leaves much scope for improvement> under the headings:- 1: Wire-Rope Connections with Rope Clips. 2: Reduction of Breaking Strength through Turns in the Rope. 3: Lashing Arrangements and Methods. 4. Safety of Wire Ropes against Failure. In a final section of the article, the need is mentioned for better co-ordinat- ion <in W. Germany> of studies on the protection of cargoes from damage.
