ENGINE DIAGNOSIS

The article reviews practical experience of 8 years of diagnostic measurements on diesel engines. From technical analysis of a number of 'routine cases' the combustion and vibrational problems occuring in diesel engines are identified and discussed. In arguing the case for a detailed condition monitoring and data acquisition programme, it is pointed out that many instances of short service life or serious wear of engine parts are often caused by unwitting engineer- ing failures which cannot be foreseen at the design stage of either the engine itself or the engine installation as a system.
