FACTORS AFFECTING HEAVY DUTY DIESEL FUEL ECONOMY

As a means of understanding how to increase fuel economy of reciprocating engines, the losses in a single-cylinder engine were studied and evaluated. The basic cycle loss is decreased with increased overall compression ratio. Reduced heat transfer is beneficial if exhaust gas recovery is utilized. Further fuel economies result if the load coupling permits engine operation at minimum specific consumption.
