ON THE RESPONSE OF NON-LINEAR SYSTEMS TO RANDOM INPUT

This article consists of introductory matter to a paper presented at NAV-82 <held in Naples, Dec. 1982>. In the paper, the Author, of the Registro Italiano Navale, discusses the non-linear behaviour of a ship in a seaway, a matter in which there are two separate sectors of research. One of these is concerned with the operating conditions, in which the only non-linear problems are those relating to resonant rolling motion; the other is concerned with the extreme conditions in which the non-linear phenomena involve the whole response of the ship The main problems in both these sectors of investigation are discussed, and the available methods of analysis are outlined. The equivalent linearisation method has advantages in the analysis of resonant rolling motion. For extreme conditions, the perturbation method and the Volterra method are preferred <it is not yet possible to decide in favour of one or the other>. Reasons for not considering some other methods are mentioned.
