Kamome Propeller Co. Ltd. and Japan Marine Machinery Development Association <JAMDA> have jointly developed a skewed c.p. propeller. The first unit, which has 40 deg. skew, was fitted to a 699-grt cargo ship, of 2100 hp at 900/277 rpm, for testing in comparison with a conventional <8 deg. skew> c.p. propeller fitted to a sister ship. The article gives a brief account of these full-scale tests, and presents diagrams of the vibration acceleration measured in the stern of each ship; both vertical & axial accelerations were significantly lower for the skewed propeller. It was also found that the skewed propeller needed a slightly larger actuating force for changing pitch from astern to ahead, and that the difference in the efficiencies of the two propellers was small.
