A theoretical and experimental investigation of a Victory- and a cutter-type <Ijmuiden 44> hull has been carried out to determine their suitability for sail-assisted propulsion. Model tests were performed over a range of Fn <0.13 - 0.21 for the Victory hull, 0.20 - 0.41 for the cutter> in the Delft towing tank. Longitudinal strength, transverse strength and heeling moment were measured as a function of speed, inclination and drift. A computer program was developed to compare the navigational possibilities of the two modes of propulsion.
