HOPPER DREDGES AND CERTAIN ASPECTS OF THEIR DESIGN

The construction of a number of new hopper dredgers in the United States has served to generate renewed interest in the design of such vessels, and the U.S. Coast Guard has proposed new regulations applicable to load line and stability requirements. This paper discusses various physical characteristics and operational considerations that affect the design of this kind of plant, including the proposed regulatory requirements, the characteristics of certain new vessels recently constructed or presently under construction, and other current developments of interest.
