TECHNICAL AND FINANCIAL ALTERNATIVES FOR ADVANCED DESIGN DRY BULK CARRIER CONCEPTS

In an attempt to reduce the cost disadvantage of the U.S. flag dry bulk shipping relative to foreign flag shipping, a broad range of new technology concepts for incorporation in new bulk carrier designs is identified. These concepts, all directed toward cost saving in acquisition and/or operating costs, are grouped in the following categories: 1. Basic ship propulsion; 2. Resistance and propulsion; 3. Propulsion machinery; 4.Cargo handling. Each potential improvement is considered parametrically for a range of design conditions and the most promising alternatives are combined into a composite series of parametric designs.
