DEVELOPMENT OF THE SPECIALISED DRY BULK CARRIER

The Author reviews the development of the modern oceangoing bulk carrier from turn-of-the-century designs through today's big ore/ bulk/oil ships. The dramatic expansion of the world's dry-bulk fleet in the decades following World War II is discussed together with the various types of specialised carriers and their cargoes. It is expected that bulk-carrier design changes in the near future will evolve at a slower pace than in the recent past, and that emphasis on improved fuel efficiency will result in slower-speed operation.
