After first briefly tracing the development of the Wasp <W. A. Souter Patrol> 55 range of 14-, 17-, 20- and 23-m fast reaction patrol boats, designed by Don Shead, the Author describes the 17-m version, two of which have recently been handed over to the Trinidad Coastguard. Principal particulars are:- Length, o.a. 16.76m, w.l. 13.9 m; Beam 4.2 m; Depth 2.14 m; Draught 1.4m; Displacement <full load> 21,850 kg, <light> 17,360 kg; Engine power 2 x 650 bhp at 2,300 rpm; Speed 28/30 knots; Crew 6. The deep-V, hard-chine planing hull is in GRP moulded by Island Plastics and carries a Lloyds Register Hull Construction Certificate for Service Craft. Propulsion machinery comprises twin 8-cylinder V-92 Stewart & Stevenson Detroit Diesel engines, driving three-bladed propellers through V-drive reduction gearboxes; should higher speeds of up to 36 knots be specified, twin 12-cylinder V-92 Detroit Diesels, each developing 900 bhp, can be fitted as an alternative to the 8-cylinder units. Details of the auxiliary machinery, power-assisted steering, fuel tank capacities, navigational aids, LSA and accommodation are given. A Dunlop 3.26-m Seasledge 4-man tender is stowed on the after deck. A general arrangement drawing is included.
