FLEXIBLE AUTOMATIC SHIP CONTROLLERS FOR TRACK-KEEPING IN RESTRICTED WATERWAYS

This paper describes one area of work being currently undertaken on the Cardiff Ship Simulator <CASSIM> that is of concern to Ship Navigation Automation. Track-keepers are being designed containing novel features which enable a ship's response to be adjusted to the known requirements of a port area. In addition to describing the track-keeper, their use as a design tool in simulation studies for identifying critical manoeuvring areas and determining navigational policy will be discussed. The implementation of such track-keepers as a computer assisted navigational aid in dedicated port approach work is also discussed.
