THE GENERATION AND CONTROL OF ROLL MOTION OF SHIPS IN CLOSE TURNS

The paper presents a computer simulation study of the coupled surge, sway, yaw and roll motions of a ro-ro ship in close turns. A non-linear mathematical model consisting of four principal equations describing axial and transverse forces and yawing and heeling moments is discussed. The mathematical model includes force and moment disturbances from wind and irregular waves. A true stochastic realisation of the wave height of encounter is obtained by feeding a white noise signal into a suitable mathematical filter. The simulations were carried out by means of the interactive program SIMNON. The mathematical model was verified by full-scale trials and model tests.
