SHIP STEERING AUTOMATIC CONTROL SOLVED BY A POLYNOMIAL OBSERVER

The paper outlines the design principles of a microprocessor-based autopilot that includes a state observer which has the function of improving the gyro data and extrapolating them to devise a suitable control strategy. The state observer uses as a reference basis the Laguerre orthoganal polynomials which have been successfully adopted for attitude control of satellites. This offers the advantages of saving computer time and memory locations as well as the reduction of errors through use of a weighted minimum squares criterion.
