A PROCEDURE FOR DETERMINING THE OPTIMAL TRIM OF A SHIP

In the practical operation of cargo ships fitted with a bow bulb, there are certain loading conditions in which the bulb or the afterbody is partially submerged leading to significant changes in the resistance and propulsion properties. On the basis of model tests with systematically varied conditions of trim and displacement, a mathematical procedure for determining the optimal trim for a given ship speed and fuel consumption has been derived. The method has been made available as master's data sheets for the rapid determination of optimal trim and for checking the results of computer calculations. The applicability of the method is demonstrated for the "OBC", "Meridian" and "Type 271" cargo ships.
