INVESTIGATION ON HIGHER-STRENGTH SHIPBUILDING STEELS BY DIFFERENT BRITTLE-FRACTURE TEST METHODS

The brittle-fracture characteristics of three high-strength shipbuilding steels (a low-alloy and a new micro-alloy steel to Soviet specifications and a micro-alloy steel to an E. German specification) were investigated as part of wider investigations on the brittle-fracture characteristics of ship steels and on the various test methods and criteria for these characteristics. In this account of the investigation. in which a number of heats of the three steels were used, the results of the different tests are presented in detail and discussed, several conclusions are drawn, and some recommendations are made on the test methods.
