ESTIMATE OF FUTURE REPAIR AND MAINTENANCE EXPENDITURES AT THE SHIP DESIGN STAGE

The Authors present a method for estimating repair and maintenance expenditures <or workloads> incurred during the life of a ship. The basis of this method is the summation of a mathematical time series, the members of which represent the cumulative costs <or workloads> up to a given point in the ship's lifespan. It is explained how such a series can be represented as a curve in non-dimensional coordinates and how this generalised curve can be transformed into a number of curves in absolute coordinates, depending on the particular ship type under consideration. The advantage of this procedure is that well- known statistical techniques can be applied to the cost prognosis <including the "logistic function">, and random errors can be accommodated and lessened in an overall estimate.
