A NEW RNLI LIFEBOAT: THE TYNE CLASS FAST SLIPWAY BOAT

This paper discusses a 1976/7 concept for a new breed of lifeboat combining the best features of the conventional slipway-launched, twin-tunnelled, double-enders and the modern fast afloat lifeboats with transom sterns. The subsequent design work and model experiments are desctribed which led to a building specification, construction, technical and operational evaluation and development of two new Tyne Class prototypes to a stage where an order for a batch of production boats could be made.
