Brief information is given on a Nippon Kokan design for a standard 100,000-dwt bulk carrier, designed with Japan's steam coal imports in mind and claiming a 22% saving in transport costs and to have the same draught as a conventional Panamax bulk carrier.. Length o.a. is 240m, breadth 50m, and draught 12.6m. This new design has a "split" stern and two Pielstick medium-speed engines driving slow-turning twin c.p. propellers. The large ballast tanks make it unnecessary to use any holds for ballast water. A piggyback hatch-cover system will be adopted.
