TANK LEVEL GAUGING

Safe and accurate tank-contents gauging of oil-cargo and other tanks to meet the needs of today's ships is offered by a wide variety of measuring systems. The article describes the following: Saab SUM-21 (a radar-based system measuring ullage by means of microwaves), Metritape (an electric tape-measure suspended in the tank), the Enraf servo float (whose servo motor is controlled by an electronic null-balance system), the Gems TLI and Kockumation's Levelmaster ROLI sensor (both of which have a magnet-equipped float), the Norwegian HERMetic UTI (a portable unit combining ullage, temperature, and oil/water interface detection), and Victor Pyrate Ltd's Vu-Gage (which has a deck-opening or ullage-hatch cover with a toughened glass window). The self-monitoring high-level alarm systems Bastobell Mobrey Hi-Sens (an Ultrasonic system) and Enraf-Nonius (an infra-red system) are also described.
