PREDICTION OF SLOSHING LOADS IN LNG SHIPS

It is recommended that analytical approaches like the MDC 2D code should be used for preliminary design purposes to determine the effects of tank geometry and shipmotion characteristics. The code predictions should be verified by scale model testing, using random ship motion excitation, Froude-scaled ullage pressures, and pure-vapour ullage gas. The pressure scale factor should be established by correlation with full-scale data. It is believed that by using these procedures new ships can be designed to avoid large slosh pressures, and that insulation strengths can be specified to provide any desired margin of safety.
