DESIGN AND TESTING OF A HIGH-PERFORMANCE WATER JET PROPULSION UNIT

The design of a high-performance water jet propulsion unit including inlet channel, pump and outlet part with steering and reversing device is described. Results from model tests with various components of the water jet unit as well as full scale measurements carried out on a 1175 kW unit are presented. The propulsive efficiency of a water jet unit is defined and the performance of water jet propulsion in comparison with ordinary propeller propulsion is analysed and discussed for a few different types of high speed craft. For the examples studied, water jet propulsion is found to be competitive from a fuel consumption point of view and even advantageous at certain operating conditions such as cruising with reduced number of engines. Some service experience with a few water jet unit installations is also given.
