FURTHER DEVELOPMENTS ON THE COURSE KEEPING QUALITIES OF BARGES

A programme of model tests to investigate the course-keeping stability of a towed barge has been performed in a rectilinear model tank. This paper describes the test procedure and presents an analysis of the effects of various types of skegs and appendages on the towing resistance and manoeuvrability. An economical and effective solution to the problem of barge stopping by means of a rotating skeg is proposed.
