CHARACTERISTICS OF VEHICLE OWNED BY "DRUNKEN DRIVERS" IN NEW YORK STATE

The topic of "drinking and driving" has received a great deal of attention in recent years. Legislative bodies, federal, state and local law enforcement agencies, the press, and citizen organizations have focused much appropriate attention on this subject. Stricter laws have lowered the permissable blood/alcohol level for drivers and portable breathalizers have been developed for enforcement use. Special programs have been developed such as the New York State "DWI-Counterattack" and a variety of community programs to attempt to rehabilititate drivers who drive while their ability is imparied by alcohol. Most of the information concerning the drinking driver focuses on the individual himself. i.e. personal characteristics of sex and age, previous driving history etc. This report explores the subject of the vehicle owned by the drinking driver. Many times the media report accident descriptions which indicate that a drinking driver fatally injured an occupant of another vehicle but escaped with minor injuries. Information contained in this report will present a comparison of vehicle characteristics of the "Drunken Driver" and the non-drinking driver in accidents. The dat a in this report was produced using the data retrieval system developed under the VSDSS (vehicle Safety Design Surveillance System) contract FH-11-6799 for the U.S Department of Transportation. The system contains information related to vehicles, drivers, and accidents. The variables are selected, the study is designed, and the tabulations are produced by an automated computer system. The data in this report is produced from the 1971 data bank which contains information on accidents occurring in New York State during 1971.
