ROCK MASS CONDITIONS DICTATE CHOICE BETWEEN NMT AND NATM

The widespread use in Norway of the Norwegian Method of Tunnelling (NMT) is described and comparisons made with the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM). The technique, which is suitable for drill and blast tunnels in jointed rock which tends to overbreak, uses bolts and fibre reinforced shotcrete. Essential features of the process and its advantages are listed. An updated Q-system tunnel and cavern design chart is presented based on NMT permanent reinforcement princples. A further chart shows ratings for the 6 Q-system parameters for describing the rock mass at any particular site with stress reduction factor ratings updated. The possibility of combining NMT and NATM is considered.
