FROM AIRPORT TO GROWTH-POLE. REGIONAL-ECONOMIC EFFECTS, AIRPORT EXPLOITATION AND STRATEGIC COOPERATION

This paper considers the problem of regional airports which although generating economic growth in their area are unable to benefit from it. Details are given of a study which investigated the importance of exploiting business estates to finance regional airports and the involvement of surrounding local authorities in the airport's policy of business location. The cases of 4 airports are discussed: Maastricht, Schiphol, Eindhoven and Lyons. In all cases a need is identified to exploit business estates within the airport perimeter but a lack of cooperation with surrounding authorities is an obstacle to this.
