SIEVE SAND

ZEEFZAND

This report was supervised by the "Sieve sand" working group of the Netherlands Centre for Research and Contract Standardization in Civil and Traffic Engineering (CROW), and discusses the state-of-the-art with respect to the production of sieve sand coming available from construction and demolition waste, its properties, and its uses in the Netherlands. Two types of sieve sand are discerned: 1) sorting sieve sand, which comes available as a waste during the separation and sorting of construction and demolition waste; and 2) crusher sieve sand, which comes available when soil particles from the site are removed from the construction and demolition waste during the crushing stage. Sieve sand from asphalt rubble is not discussed. The following issues are dealt with: a) how the sieve sand comes available and the quantities produced; b) the nature of the material and its physical and chemical quality; c) the uses of processed and unprocessed sieve sand in civil engineering; d) the influence of selective demolition and separation on the quality of the sieve sand; e) processing methods; f) aspects concerning the Dutch environmental legislation; and g) economic aspects.
