NONDESTRUCTIVE EVALUATION OF EXISTING DEEP FOUNDATIONS

Nondestructive testing (NDT) is a proven technique for the evaluation of deep foundations, particularly for new construction projects. NDT is also valuable in evaluating deep foundations of older existing structures. This paper reviews the NDT techniques currently available for assessing older structures. Case studies are presented that demonstrate the use of different methods to inspect existing piles, drilled shafts, and caissons. The NDT methods described are applied widely in Europe and East Asia; the techniques see only limited use in North America. The authors conclude that NDT methods could be usefully employed more often; their limited use is related to unfamiliarity with the tests and a lack of awareness of their potential by the general engineering community.
