LABORATORY MEASUREMENTS OF CORROSION ACTIVITY OF STEEL REINFORCEMENT IN CONCRETE USING SIMPLE EQUIPMENT

The design and operation of a laboratory instrument for measuring the corrosion activity of steel reinforcement in concrete is proposed. The proposed instrument was constructed and its research utility evaluated against six steel-reinforced concrete prisms cured under negligible, mild, and severe conditions of corrosivity. After curing and whilst dehydrating, the prisms were measured for corrosion potentials, polarization resistances, corrosion current densities, and corrosion rates. In addition to being simple to construct and operate, the instrument was reliable in that it could apply Polarization Resistance to steel-reinforced concrete, easily and precisely distinguishing between steel reinforcements of different corrosion activity. Also, the instrument can be used to monitor changes in the corrosion activities of the steel reinforcements.
