DESIGNING DURABLE POLYMER CONCRETE OVERLAYS

This paper presents a brief literature review on the use of polymer concrete overlays for the protection and repair of bridge decks in North America and an overview of the problems encountered with their use. It also includes an analysis of thermally- and shrinkage-induced stresses. The interface stresses are found to be present in a narrow end region and, in some cases, to be high enough to cause severe distress. The experimental program included the construction and monitoring of polymer concrete overlays on bridge decks subjected to normal traffic. Based on the results of the theoretical and experimental programs, general design and construction guidelines are presented considering the following: preliminary studies, laboratory investigation, selection of thickness, theoretical investigation and final decision, method of application, and inspection and maintenance.
